As they clung to the bank of the stream, Alpha made good time, covering the next klick in just under an hour. But at that point, the stream turned west, away from the company’s southern course. There was supposed to be a trail going their way through the dense jungle they now faced, but there was no evidence of one.

Crosley asked Jif, “You think the map’s lying? If we’ve got to hack through uncut jungle, it’ll be dark before we go a couple hundred meters. Might as well stay right here for the night.”

“I don’t think the map’s lying, sir. It’s just that the trail’s location is listed as approximate. It might just be a matter of yards away.”

“Yeah…and it could be a mile, too. But okay...I’ll bite. Which way do you suggest we start looking first?”

“East, sir…toward that ridge. I reckon the trail runs right around its southern base.”

Crosley wasted no time assigning the recon to 3rd Platoon. Then he told Jif, “If you’re right and we get back from this goat-rope alive, the drinks are on me for an entire evening.”

“And if I’m wrong, Captain?”

“Then you’re back on my shitlist, Lieutenant.”

Jif was thinking of Ted Jackson as he considered the following reply: I’d be in real good company, sir.

But he thought it better to say nothing at all.
